Azizur Rahman was born in 1935 in Umor Pur Union, Sylhet,
Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan). He was an educated and highly
respected member of his village community. From a young age, he was
known as a social activist and mediator. He established his tailoring
business in the local bazaar and eventually moved to London in the
1960s to address the labour shortage in the UK. Known affectionately as
"Dorji"; which translates to "Tailor"; my father saw the move as an
opportunity to financially support his family, extended family and his
villagers, working in clothing factories in London. In 1977, at the
invitation of my uncle, my father moved to Newcastle, where the two
brothers set up a restaurant in Wallsend. Tragically, on the 10th day of
his move, he was brutally stabbed to death on May 19, 1977.
A Legacy of Compassion and Generosity
My father was known for his decency, honesty, hard work, and
generosity. He was deeply committed to financially supporting poor
families in his village, especially orphans and widows. To honour his
memory and continue his legacy of compassion, I established the Monu
Dorji Foundation.
Our Mission
The Monu Dorji Foundation is dedicated to supporting struggling families
by providing shelter, food, medication, and education for their children.
Our initiatives include:
- Annual Ramadan Food Packs: Distributing essential food
supplies to needy families.
- Flood Relief: Providing immediate assistance to families affected
by natural disasters.
- Educational Support: Funding the education of children in
underprivileged communities.
- Medical Aid: Offering financial support for essential medications
and healthcare.
